Harmony Korine - Interview

Born on january 4th, 1973. Harmony Korine has written, directed and produced a collection of a generations most noted and influential films.

At the age of 19 he surfaced as the author of film director larry clark’s debut “kids”.

Amongst great controversy the film was revered even though unable to be seen by the u.s. cinema audience due to its nc-17/unrated classification. it is seen as a classic youth culture picture. harmony went on to direct and co-produce “gummo”, another film to receive great praise and to set harmony set as a key figure in the directing role. this was followed by “julien donkey-boy”, as discussed in our interview the film was crafted using very particular techniques as well as the attitude of ‘making use of what is there’. korine’s now long time collaborator ‘chloe sevigny’ starred in the film along with werner herzog.

his latest film “mister lonely” starring werner herzog, samantha morton, diego luna, and denis lavant tells the sublime story of a michael jackson impersonator meeting a marilyn monroe look-a-like, moving to live together in a commune where lives charlie chaplin (the partner of monroe), james dean, little red riding hood, sammy davis junior, buck wheat and abe lincoln, obviously among others. meanwhile father umbrillo, herzog, is giving the teachings of life and with the devoted help from a group of nuns is flying a food aid administration service to local villages in a heavily forested region of brazil. mister lonely is written directed and produced by korine.

Upstairs in a tiny room within the oldest shop in london, once immortalised by charles dickens, we sat and discussed his previous work, his attitude to it, his great friend will oldham, werner herzog, and of course the wonderfully crafted mister lonely.

Mister Lonely is released by Tartan films across cinemas throughout the uk
