He studied at the bayerische staatslehranstalt fur photographie in munich between 1984 and 1986 and then moved to london in september 1986.
At the venice biennale we filmed juergen’s show ‘kiev’. the collection of photographs placed beautifully in groups of five images to each vitrine were exhibited in a slightly decaying but staggeringly beautiful palazzo. the walls still covered with their original damask silk, the fireplace a masterpiece of carved marble and the tall windows overlooking typically venetian life crafted a setting that, before the adoring crowds arrived, was serene and personal. juergen’s take on the ukrainian project was to analyse the desire for material wealth, the desire from these citizens for fashion, for luxury goods, for personal appearances to be alike the celebrated personalities that grace the pages of the press. the temptation and commercial world competing on all levels, from plasma screens to ltd edition handbags. the collection discusses new money and the crave for all that it is urged to buy.
Back in london our interview with juergen took place in the privacy of his newly finished home, a building that has been shrouded in scaffolding for the past few years. the interview was an early morning before juergen was due to take a mid day train to paris to shoot laura dern.
