M.I.A - Interview

Maya Arul had just returned from recording her new album kala. this, her second, had been a varied process of different places, studios, producers and influences that would set a sound of great atmosphere and complexity.

the album sees collaborative parts through vocals and production from timbaland, $witch, diplo, blaqstarr, african boy and the wilcannia mob. in its making has spanned trinidad, jamaica, australia, japan, and the u.s. in her own words the album is the sound of roadside sound systems, taxicab transistors, dvd-wired dollar vans, motorbike couriers and parking lot pull ups.

in comparison to our last meeting during an interview for issue #8, m.i.a. still as charming and interesting as ever, has a renewed affection for performing and the burning desire for going about the process in a different way.
